What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is the foundation of a peer-to-peer electronic cash system. With Bitcoin came block chain technology allowing for currency decentralization. That means that the power is in the hands of many instead of few. By purchasing Bitcoin and using Bitcoin, you are using the block chain that allows for transactions to be fast, safe, and secure. Value can be transferred from one person to another anywhere in the world. Yes, it really is as simple as that.

The First Fork

Part of what makes Bitcoin so great, is that it is open source. Programmers and developers, alongside miners and individual users, make up our community. When a change is to be made to the software protocol that make up the Bitcoin blockchain technology, ideally there should be a general consensus for the change to occur. So what happens when not everyone agrees?

This is exactly what happened in 2017 when a proposed change, called Segregated Witness (Segwit), was to be adopted. However, there was controversy among the community as to whether this change was in the spirit of Bitcoin's true purpose. A truly decentralized currency has the power to circumvent the need for banking institutions, and such a radical concept would have many enemies.

Stay Vigilant

I personally do not believe that those who would see Bitcoin fail would not have the means to infiltrate and influence the community. It is always important to understand the facts, ask questions, and think about the ways that we may be vulnerable to manipulation. I call upon those that would see Bitcoin succeed, to join in on this mission as we define what it really means to be a Bitcoin purist. Those that learn, question, and educate, so that the newcomers can make their own decisions as not to become so easily persuaded.

Bitcoin is a technology and has the power to change the world. It is neutral. However it would be naive to believe that behind the scenes, there are no ulterior agendas. Not everyone hopes for a bright, fair, and prosperous future for all. The fight for decentralization of wealth is not over with the origin of Bitcoin. It has only just begun.
